Children In Need fans sob as Repair Shop restore chair made in memory of mum's late son

Children in Need viewers were left in tears after The Repair Shop's Will Kirk presented a special project to a couple who lost their son to Encephalitis when he was just 18 years old.

The presenter welled up after revealing the renovated chair that was made in memory for Etienne who died 10 years ago due to the condition which is an inflammation of the brain

Etienne's mum explained to viewers on Friday night: "This chair was made in memory for my son, Etienne.

"When he was eight years old he suddenly became severely ill with encephalitis which is a bit like meningitis but is an inflammation of the whole brain, he was in intensive care but it was touch and go."

She said he had issues with his vision and epilepsy and had to be moved to Whitehaven school, which helped him while he was suffering with his condition.

She continued: "When you have a child with additional needs and you find the right school it's amazing."

Tragically, he was there for two years but then died unexpectedly from a seizure in the night.

One viewer wrote: "Absolutely sobbing at children in need," while another added: "Children in need always makes me cry - some really sad stories. I'll definitely be hugging my daughters that little bit tighter tonight."

"Children in need gets me emotional every time," a third chimed.

Will became quite emotional during the segment and was seen wiping his eyes as he spoke with the family.

At Etienne's funeral, his family asked everyone to donate money to the school as it played such a big part in his life.

The school commissioned the wooden chair for everyone to sit on and remember Etienne.

It had a monkey carved into one of the pillars which symbolised his "cheekiness".

However the chair fell into disrepair after it was left out in the sun, so Will had his work cut out to return it to its former glory.

Will said: "At the moment the chair can't be enjoyed by any children. It's really wobbly and I think it's due to years of water getting in all the cracks.

"Not only does it need to look beautiful but it needs to properly function as well."

Will had a plaque added to the chair with Etienne's name on it as well as a symbol that the parents designed.

He explained: "It shows a comet which reflects and for us represents the light which he brought into our lives.

"It's a very short light but it has a long tail, the lightning bolt is because he was such a fan of Harry Potter."
