Childhood favourite drink SunnyD makes major change with fans thirsty to try it out

Fans of a popular orange drink for kids are thirsty for the chance to try out a new alcoholic version.

SunnyD Vodka Seltzer is being launched in the USA and will be available in stores from March 11 - while Brits are eager to know when they can get their hands on the beverage.

The original drink was a massive success when it was launched in the UK and a year later, in 1999, it was the third biggest seller behind Coca-Cola and Pepsi.

But it was not all good news for SunnyD as health and consumer groups began highlighting its high sugar and low juice content.

Now the company is hoping to hit back with the new drink which has certainly caught the attention of fans who have nostalgic memories of it.

Lovers of SunnyD have been going wild on social media and the company that makes the drink has said it is “rooted in nostalgia but with a taste that resonates today”.

Ilene Bergenfeld, Chief Marketing Officer, of Harvest Hill said: "SunnyD is a powerful brand, the most boldly unique orange drink on the planet.

"Consumers are passionate about this iconic brand, rooted in nostalgia but with a taste that resonates today. Many have told us that they enjoy SunnyD as a mixer and asked for this product. So, we looked at the hard seltzer category, and thought, good, but we can do better. And SunnyD Vodka Seltzer was born."

On Twitter a fan wrote: “Damn that sounds good,” while others said that they always used to add alcohol to their SunnyD, with one person writing: “SunnyD has always been for adults.”

Another joked: “They owe me the royalties,” and a comment read: "I'm hoping it tastes like it should. I mix vodka and sunnyD all the time."

While a further wrote: “They've got my attention as well. Millenial nostalgia marketing has proven a success! I heard McDonald's is rolling out Happy Meals for adults.”

The new drink, which will retail in a pack of four for $9.99 (£8.44), contains real fruit juice, sparkling water, natural orange flavor, and vodka.
