Child sex offence suspect named, Jet2 row and 'Raw sewage' in River Mersey

Good afternoon, these are the latest lunchtime ECHO headlines.

Child sex offence suspect named after stabbing himself in the throat

The suspect of a range of child sex offences has been named.

Merseyside Police confirmed that a man was taken to hospital after being detained by police on St Chad's Drive in Kirkby at around 5pm on Friday, after stabbing himself in the neck. It was also confirmed that a 55-year-old man from Kirkby had been arrested on suspicion of grooming a child under 14 and possession of a bladed article.

Following the incident a large cordon was set up and now Merseyside Police has today, Tuesday, August 30, confirmed that Stephen McLoughlin, of Pitsmead Road, Kirkby has been charged with:

  • Attempt to engage in sexual communication with a child
  • Attempt to incite a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity
  • Attempt to engage in sexual communication with a child
  • Attempt to incite a girl aged 13 – 15 to engage in sexual activity
  • Possession of a bladed article

Jet2 flight forced to divert after passenger attacks crew in 'champagne row'

A flight from Manchester Airport had to be diverted after an "OAP" attacked a Jet2 employee after he allegedly took away her gin and tonic.

Airline staff were forced to divert the Rhodes flight to Munich on Wednesday, August 24, so they could remove her. Videos circulating on social media show a male staff member trying to calm down a grey-haired woman, who appears to be in her 70s.

One of the passengers on the flight, who wished to remain anonymous, told The Mirror that the woman also urinated in her seat before she was escorted off the plane by nine police officers.

United Utilities respond to videos of raw sewage in River Mersey

United Utilities says it is not responsible for raw sewage in the River Mersey after 'revolting' videos and images appeared online over the weekend.

A number of videos and pictures have been shared in recent days which appear to show large amounts of raw sewage in the Mersey. One video, taken of waste in the water at Otterspool Promenade went viral, with thousands of shares.

That video was taken by Liverpool Councillor Steve Munby, who told the ECHO the scene in the water at Otterspool was 'one of the most revolting things he had ever seen."
