Boy, 11, dies in Barking flat fire in the early hours of the morning as two adults and two children flee

A boy has died following a flat fire in Barking, east London, in the early hours of Tuesday, the London Fire Brigade has said. Two adults and two children managed to flee the flames before fire crews arrived at the scene, but tragically an 11-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene in Stern Close.

London Fire Brigade were called to the blaze at 3.25am on Tuesday morning, with around 40 firefighters from Barking, East Ham and other surrounding areas attending to fight the flames in the three-roomed flat which was on the second floor of an apartment building. A man was also treated at the scene by crews.

The flat was destroyed by the blaze, which is currently under investigation by the London Fire Brigade and the Metropolitan Police.

In a statement, the Met said: “Four other people, two adults and two children, were taken to hospital, none were in a life-threatening condition. Police, in consultation with the LFB, are investigating the cause of the fire.

“Inquiries continue, but at this this early stage the fire does not appear to be suspicious.”
