A 22-month-old child has died in the New South Wales Lake Macquarie region after being struck by a car.

Emergency services were called to a home on Rosemary Row at Rathmines at 2.30pm, after reports a child had been hit by a vehicle in a driveway.

Paramedics treated the toddler but the child died at the scene.

A 38-year-old male driver has been taken to John Hunter Hospital for mandatory testing.

Distraught family members could be seen coming and going from the home throughout the afternoon as the driveway and surrounding area was declared a crime scene.

Detectives have been measuring distances to and from an all-terrain vehicle parked in the driveway, as well as examining underneath the car.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
