Child among three people from the same family killed in Vancouver house fire

VANCOUVER — Fire officials in Vancouver say a child was among the three people who died in a house fire that injured two other people from the same family Sunday morning.

Fire Chief Karen Fry says the basement suite of the detached home in the city's east end was "fully enveloped" in flames when fire and rescue personnel arrived.

Fry says two adults who were found injured outside told emergency crews that two more adults and a child were still inside the burning home.

She says firefighters found them, but "extensive and intense efforts" to resuscitate them were unsuccessful and they were pronounced dead at the scene.

Assistant Chief Brian Bertuzzi confirmed that the grandfather and mother of the child, who was under 10, had died, while their father sustained burns and their grandmother suffered smoke inhalation.

A statement from Fry says preliminary findings from an investigation into the fire did not indicate anything suspicious, and it wasn't yet known whether smoke alarms were working.
