A woman has died, and three other people were wounded, including her 2-year-old son, Wednesday afternoon in a shooting in Auburn Gresham on the South Side, authorities said.

About 3:15 p.m., the woman, her son, the boy’s father and another man were standing on the sidewalk in the 1200 block of West 81st Street when a black vehicle approached and multiple assailants stepped out and fired toward the group, Chicago Police Chief of Patrol Brian McDermott told reporters Wednesday evening.

The woman, 23, was shot multiple times and was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she later died, authorities said.

The boy was struck in the foot and was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in good condition, officials said.

One man, 62, was shot in the back, officials said. His condition was stabilized. A second man, 29, was shot in the foot and was listed in good condition.

McDermott told reporters that the woman and 29-year-old man were the parents of the child.

“All acts of violence are difficult to deal with, but it’s especially difficult when there’s a child involved,” McDermott said. “‘I’d like to emphasize that acts of violence such as this will not be tolerated in the city of Chicago.”

Detectives recovered the vehicle used and believe the shooting was targeted, McDermott said.

The Rev. Michael Pfleger, pastor at St. Sabina Catholic Church in Auburn Gresham, told reporters the shooters “had no heart or conscience.”

“When you aim at a mother and a 2-year-old child and a man sitting there, you have no conscience,” Pfleger said.

Pfleger says he sees the family “sitting outside often when he drives down the street.”

No one was in custody.
