An air ambulance was also scrambled to the estate, landing nearby on a grassed area beside the former Queens Hotel and Pub as concerned locals watched on in horror.

One Swanley Avenue resident said: "My son heard loud screams and got me and we went running down the stairs. The young lad had gone back inside the house.

"We heard they took the little lad to hospital, it's just awful. It's so scary how dogs can just turn and it's so dangerous. There are young children that play out here."

Another, who lives on nearby Ridgewood Avenue, added: "There were loads of police on Swanley Avenue earlier, at about 1pm, and an air ambulance just behind as its the only place it could land.

"There were so many people stood around. We heard a young child had been mauled by a dog so I rang my grandchildren straight away because I was so worried."

It is also understood that a woman has also been arrested following the incident on suspicion of having a dog that was dangerously out of control. Greater Manchester Police have been contacted for full details.

Local councillor Pat Karney said: "I've had local people contacting me about this. All of Monsall hope that the child is okay and that they will make a full recovery. It is a very traumatic experience for the child and all their family.

"Recently I have been around lots of estates during the local elections and there's a growing concern about aggressive dogs. The council will be meeting with Greater Manchester Police to see what steps we can take before there are more injuries and fatalities in our city."

A cordon was put in place but had been cleared by 5pm.
