The newest player for the Kansas City Chiefs has been assigned a jersey number.
The Chiefs acquired WR Kadarius Toney from the New York Giants on Thursday. A few hours after the news broke, Toney posted a picture of his new jersey number on Instagram and it’s a bit surprising. He’ll be wearing the No. 19 jersey in Kansas City, which has been worn by many players this season including WR Corey Coleman and K Matt Ammendola. The most recent player to wear the numbers is K Matthew Wright, who remains on the practice squad and will presumably be assigned a new jersey number.
Why is this jersey choice a bit surprising? Well, Toney’s No. 89 jersey that he wore with New York was open in K.C. with Chris Conley being poached by the Tennessee Titans. The 89 seems to be significant to Toney, considering he has it tattooed on his body.

Toney couldn’t go with No. 4, which was the jersey number he wore at Blount High School in Alabama. That number belongs to Chad Henne for the time being.
It’s possible that this choice indicates a complete reset for Toney. He didn’t exactly have the most glamorous tenure during his time in New York. Expect to learn more about his jersey number choice when the team officially introduces Toney to the media.
