Chiefs waive WR Mathew Sexton from injured reserve

The Kansas City Chiefs have waived receiver Mathew Sexton from the injured reserve list with an injury settlement, per the NFL’s transaction report.

Sexton, 24, was waived with an injury designation in June. He cleared waivers which put him on the Chiefs’ injured reserve list, thus giving him the option to reach an injury settlement with the team in order to become a free agent.

The Chiefs had signed Sexton back in January to a reserve/future deal. An undrafted free agent out of Eastern Michigan, Sexton played for The Spring League’s Aviators in 2021 and was later signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers. He participated in a couple preseason games in 2021 but has not yet seen any NFL regular season action.

Although he hasn’t stuck with a team, Sexton has tools that have allowed him to stand out in scouting circles. After earning 1,335 yards and nine touchdowns on 100 receptions along with three total return touchdowns at Eastern Michigan, the 5-foot-10, 176-pounder ran a low-4.3-second 40-yard dash at the Michigan State’s pro day leading up to the 2020 NFL draft.
