Chiefs UDFA Spotlight: Marshall S Isaiah Norman

A letter winner at Cordova High School in Cordova, Tennessee, Norman was a two-star recruit coming into college. He committed to Austin Peay in Clarksville, Tennessee in January of 2017, agreeing to a redshirt season as a Freshman.

Norman would spend the next four years of his career with the Governors before transferring to Marshall for his final year of eligibility in 2022. After proving he could play at the FCS level at a high level, he wanted to do the same at an FBS school before taking the opportunity to go pro in the NFL.

Stats

Courtney Pedroza/The Leaf-Chronicle

Austin Peay stats (2017-2021): 42 games played, with 137 total tackles, 13 passes defended, 5.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Marshall stats (2022): 9 games played, 23 total tackles, one fumble recovery.

Norman is a high-energy player with positional versatility. He plays strong safety, free safety and had over 100 snaps as a nickel cornerback in 2022 at Marshall. Tackling is perhaps his best asset, consistently making plays in the open field with only one missed tackle a season ago. He seems just as comfortable attacking the line of scrimmage as he does in man coverage or in a single-high or two-high look.

As with most undrafted free agents, the pathway to the 53-man roster is going to be showcasing your talents to the coaching staff during training camp and the preseason. Making a strong impression on ST coordinator Dave Toub certainly won’t hurt his chances.

No matter what it’s going to be tough to make this roster at the defensive back position. It’s perhaps the most competitive position group in Kansas City and there are a lot of players that the team made a draft investment in. Norman likely be a candidate for the practice squad unless an injury occurs that moves him up the pecking order.
