Chiefs to sign DE Carlos Dunlap on one-year deal

The Kansas City Chiefs are finally getting the edge rusher help they’ve been looking for.

As first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Chiefs are signing veteran DE Carlos Dunlap on a one-year deal. Dunlap got in town last night for a visit with the team, looking for the right fit for the 2022 NFL season. He seems to have found that fit in Kansas City where he’ll make up to $8 million in 2022.

“It’s been a whirlwind trip,” Dunlap told NFL reporter Josina Anderson. “I met with coaches last night & started looking at film around midnight. It’s an exciting time for me and a long time coming.”

A former second-round draft pick out of Florida in 2010, the veteran edge rusher spent nearly a decade with the Cincinnati Bengals. He was traded to the Seattle Seahawks at the midseason mark of the 2020 NFL season and spent the past 1.5 years with them. During his career, Dunlap has accumulated 539 total tackles, 96 sacks, 21 forced fumbles, nine fumble recoveries, 69 passes batted, two interceptions and three defensive touchdowns.

The 33-year-old Dunlap is a scheme fit for Steve Spagnuolo’s system, boasting elite size and length at the edge rusher position. He’ll help solidify a position group in Kansas City that was lacking veteran depth. He should make contributions on defense right away if he can pick up where he left off last season. Five of Dunlap’s 8.5 sacks last season came against opponents on the Chiefs’ 2022 schedule, including two against their Week 1 opponent, the Arizona Cardinals.
