According to a tweet from Chiefs Digest reporter Matt Derrick on Wednesday, the Kansas City Chiefs signed wide receiver Jason Brownlee to their practice squad and terminated the contract of tight end Robert Tonyan.
Brownlee entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent last season and initially signed with the New York Jets after an impressive college career at Southern Mississippi. The former Golden Eagle made the Jets’ initial 53-man roster last season and briefly saw playing time before he was waived by New York earlier this year.
Like Brownlee, Tonyan also entered the league as an undrafted free agent. An Indiana State product, Tonyan initially signed with the Detroit Lions practice squad in 2017 and spent the majority of his career bouncing around the NFL before he signed a practice squad contract with the Chiefs in December 2024.

It is unknown if Brownlee will be elevated to the active roster ahead of Kansas City’s AFC divisional round matchup against the Houston Texans on Saturday, but the second-year wide receiver is sure to provide much-needed depth for the defending Super Bowl champions.
