Kansas City Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt’s return to the franchise surprised many around the league. Head coach Andy Reid has often been open to giving players another chance to redeem themselves from controversial situations.
Hunt addressed the media on Wednesday for the first time since signing with the team, reflecting on his growth since his release in 2018.
“Honestly, no, I didn’t think I’d end up back here,” said Hunt. “But it’s crazy how some things happen to work out.”
The 29-year-old notably started his career in Kansas City, playing two seasons under Reid before being released due to off-the-field issues.
“I was very young at that time, 23, and had a lot of success going for me,” said Hunt. “I felt like I needed time to figure myself out and learn. I feel like it was good for me to do that. I had the opportunity to go to the (Cleveland) Browns and stuff, and that’s my hometown, so I guess it worked out.”
While with the Browns, Hunt finished the 2023 season with 135 carries for 411 yards and nine touchdowns in 15 games. He earned All-Rookie and Pro Bowl honors in the 2017 season, with the Chiefs winning the rushing title with 1,327 yards. He shared his immediate thoughts on the Chiefs facility after years away.
“Honestly, my first thought was the building smelled the same, looks the same, and just brought back so many memories,” said Hunt. “I couldn’t be more excited to go play for a head coach like Coach Reid.”
The return of Hunt with a mature mindset is a plus for the undefeated Chiefs, who are awaiting the return of starter Isiah Pacheco.
