The latest unbelievable moment from Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was a crucial touchdown pass to his favorite target, Travis Kelce. The falling pass garnered all the attention as Mahomes explained his mindset for the attempt during his postgame press conference after defeating the Houston Texans in the AFC Divisional playoffs game.
“I had to – I knew I was going to have to buy a little time. We were at third-and-long in the red zone, but we had talked about that exact play. We just had – Trav (Travis Kelce) had to get over that linebacker, so I had to get – I had to buy a little bit of time, so I stepped up in the pocket (and I) was able
to get enough on it to get in the end zone. I mean, that was a big play in the game, and we kind of needed to get in the end zone after that long drive that they (the Texans) had.”
Mahomes’s focus and flexibility were again on display, and he credited his longtime trainer with preparing him for the moment.
“It’s just everything I got. It was the Bobby Stroupe workouts (laughter). It was a – you just –you find a way in those big moments, and that was a big moment. I was glad that Trav (Travis Kelce) was in that spot where I was able to get him the football.”
Throughout the game, Mahomes’ connections with Kelce clinched another career milestone for the Pro Bowl tight end. He is now the NFL’s all-time leader in postseason games with 100+ receiving yards. The reigning Super Bowl MVP mentioned his practice sessions with Kelce as helpful for producing that moment.
“There was a little bit of, ‘I didn’t know if that dude (Texans LB Azeez Al-Shaair) was going to get back in there.’ It was kind of one that was (either) a touchdown or a pick. I was able to get it in to get through and get to the end zone, but it’s something that we worked on. I mean, that’s end of the day. We worked on that play and that situation – third-and-long, and we were able to do that.”
The pass is another moment for the career highlight reel of the Chiefs superstar duo as they continue to find ways to electrify the crowd at Arrowhead Stadium.
