Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes: Defense’s depth is key to early-season success

The offseason work of Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach was evident in Thursday’s victory over the Denver Broncos. A variety of contributors on defense were the catalysts throughout the game.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes acknowledged the significant improvements in the defense. He spoke with reporters after the game about the defense’s depth being a strength in the success this season.

“Its depth. I mean, they’ve done a great job not only drafting but getting key free agents and developing guys,” said Mahomes. “I mean, we have guys that are starters on other teams that are trying to find a way to get on the football field. And when they get on the football field, they’re making plays.”

The Broncos’ offense only managed 95 yards passing from quarterback Russell Wilson, as he would also throw two interceptions while under pressure throughout the night.

“So when a guy like Nick Bolton goes down, we throw in Drew (Tranquill), and he can be a star middle linebacker,” Mahomes explained. “Same with some of the DBs, we can almost rotate guys in because we have that depth on the defense. They’re playing with confidence, and then you got a guy like nine-five (Chris Jones) in the middle, he takes up a lot of the attention, and so I guess those other guys get free, and those guys are making the most of it, and I’m excited to get Charles back there I think this next week.”

The Chiefs defense has imposed its will on opposing offenses this season through six games. The offense is still working out the kinks in the red zone but is still effective enough to secure victories.
