This week’s marquee news has been the history-making contract restructuring of Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The franchise guaranteed the reigning MVP compensation-wise until at least 2026, securing that he is being paid amongst the top players in the league.
Mahomes has started the new season without the explosive moment everyone has commonly seen from him and the Chiefs offense. He still found a way to win, throwing two touchdown passes for over 300 yards in last Sunday’s victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Mahomes spoke about his new restructured contract during Wednesday’s press conference after practice.

And (I’m) glad that now I can go out there and play football.” said Mahomes, “And so you get that security, and I already had it, but to get a little bump, and then be able to go back out there and just play football. I’m excited for it.”
Mahomes agreed to a restructured contract on Monday, giving him $210.6 million between 2023 and 2026. The new deal is the most money in NFL history over a four-season span, with compensation for those years now guaranteed.
“Yeah, it’s hard you get to watch, see what’s going on around the league, and find that right spot. And I thought we found a good one in this negotiation that we did that; we’ll be able to still keep kind of space for other guys to get signed.” said Mahomes, “But obviously, I got a little bit more money upfront, and then we’ll kind of redo it and renegotiate whenever we get to that mark that we talked about. So it’s a special place and a special relationship that I have with the team to trust them. Even when I signed the last contract, know that this was going to happen, and then probably going to happen again, at some point.”
The Chiefs and Mahomes are planning to revisit the agreement after the 2026 season, as the two-time Super Bowl champion revealed his interest in money stretched well before his playing days.
“I’ve always kind of liked it. If I didn’t become an NFL player, I wanted to be either a sports agent or work in sports marketing. I always wanted to help players. So I’ve always been interested in it.” said Mahomes, “And I know that I’m doing it a different way than other people. But I feel like it’s the right way for me because of the trust I have in the front office that I’m going to still make a lot of money and be set for life and for my kids and everything like that. But hopefully, it gives us a chance to go out there and win football games as well.”
Mahomes hopes his new contract sparks better compensation for his position group moving forward as he focuses on this Sunday’s game as the struggling Chicago Bears make their way to Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs want a home win to propel them back to their championship mindset and shake off their slow offensive start this season.
