Chiefs HC Andy Reid gives update on Chris Jones’ free agency status

The Kansas City Chiefs could look very different next week as free agency begins, and several players could be on the move. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has maintained his stance of being hands-off on player negotiations, leaving trust in the front office, but even he can’t avoid the burning media questions.

Reid appeared on Thursday’s episode of The Rich Eisen Show to discuss several topics related to the thrilling Super Bowl LVIII victory. Eisen didn’t hesitate to ask about defensive tackle Chris Jones’s contract and possible free agency status.

“Not a whole lot (news to share),” Reid explained. “We’d love to have him back. Brett Veach and his gang are working through that. Chris Shea works with our cap and does the contracts. So, they’re all working through this thing. We’ve had great communication. So, we’ll just see where it goes from here.”

Jones posted another of his infamous cryptic messages on ‘X’ Thursday morning, shortly before Reid’s appearance on the show. Reid, who is not on any social media applications, didn’t understand the post and focused on the Chiefs front office staff’s chances of closing the deal.

“I’m hoping. I can’t give you anything because I don’t have a whole lot,” said Reid. “I’m doing all these media things, so maybe something is going better than I think it is.”

The Chiefs have been blunt about Jones’s re-signing, which is vital during the offseason. Many critics assume a deal will be done sooner rather than later, but Kansas City knows how serious the All-Pro defensive tackle is about getting a high-paying contract and doesn’t want a repeat of last year.
