The 49ers and Chiefs appear to be going out of their respective ways to not put any bulletin board material out for one another.
Chiefs star defensive tackle Chris Jones on Wednesday in a media session offered extremely high, albeit very vague, praise for San Francisco’s offense, calling it the best offense he’s ever seen.
“They’re the best I’ve ever seen,” Jones said.
When pressed about whether the 49ers are better than the various Patrick Mahomes-led Chiefs offenses, Jones stayed the course of not saying anything inflammatory. He cited the 49ers players, coaches and organization as reasons this group is better than some of the great offenses Kansas City has had.
Top to bottom he may be right. Mahomes’ individual brilliance puts the Chiefs in a different stratosphere, but the 49ers are loaded at the skill positions in ways Kansas City wasn’t even when it had Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce terrorizing defenses.
Where the 49ers stack up against the great Chiefs offenses doesn’t matter much for Sunday’s game though. They need to be better than this year’s very good Chiefs defense if they want to secure a win and avenge a Super Bowl LIV loss to Kansas City.
Jones knows his team is in for a battle regardless of how the 49ers offense compares to past Chiefs offenses.
“It’s the biggest challenge we’ve faced so far,” Jones said.
