Chiefs DE Frank Clark recruiting Tyrann Mathieu back to Kansas City

The Kansas City Chiefs still have several unrestricted free agents floating around out there, including star S Tyrann Mathieu.

Mathieu took his first visit during free agency earlier this week, meeting with the Saints’ brass in New Orleans, Louisiana while touring team facilities. Mathieu, of course, played college football at LSU in Baton Rouge and he grew up in New Orleans.

Mathieu previously stated that he’d love to represent his hometown by playing for the Saints, but he left the Saints’ facilities without a deal and doesn’t appear to be in a rush to sign one. The prospect of Mathieu signing elsewhere had one Chiefs defender sending out his own recruiting pitch on social media.

Chiefs defensive end Frank Clark posted a message to Mathieu on his Instagram story on Wednesday. KC Sports Network’s Matt Lane shared a screenshot of the message.

“One mo run 5! I need my dog,” Clark wrote before tagging Mathieu’s Instagram.

Clark and Mathieu both came to Kansas City together back in 2019, helping bring some attitude to the Chiefs’ rebuilt defense under Steve Spagnuolo. Clark took a pay cut this offseason to stay in Kansas City, but speculation abounds that Mathieu’s contract demands have been too high, which has held up his market in free agency. Mathieu is coming off of a contract with the Chiefs where he earned upwards of $14 million per year.

It’s unclear if the front office in K.C. wants to bring Mathieu back as Clark does. After the start of free agency, it was reported that the Chiefs hadn’t even offered Mathieu a contract. Has their stance changed at all and would Mathieu even want to return at this point? It’s tough to tell, but it’s good to see Clark making an effort either way.
