The Kansas City Chiefs were without safety Bryan Cook last year after he suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 13 against the Green Bay Packers. He has been on the road to recovery and is participating in training camp, hoping to regain lost momentum.
During a press conference on Thursday, Cook gave reporters an update on his recovery from the unfortunate injury and explained why he was unable to play in the postseason earlier this year.
“It was challenging,” Cook told the media. “The hardest part is realizing your guys are out there battling, and you can’t do anything to help them. But at the end of the day, shout out to them; they got the job done. It wasn’t that bad when you look at the end. I was able to recover. They got the job done on the back end, and I have an opportunity now to (re-introduce) myself and where I am in today’s time.”
In college, Cook suffered a similar injury, which required some medical hardware to be installed in his ankle. According to the third-year safety, the pieces that were already in his body from the first surgery helped repair the damage done in 2023.
“I basically ruptured the tightrope that was already in there, (and) I tore my deltoid ligament as well,” Cook explained. “We went in, repaired that, repaired the tightrope, added another tightrope in there, and added an anchor. So, I’ve got a little metal in my ankle for sure, but it’s all good, though. We’re still back out here.”
After establishing himself as a steady contributor as a starter last season, Cook will be counted on more this year in Kansas City’s secondary, which is still trying to find its identity after the departure of L’Jarius Sneed.
