Chichester crash: Horror moment car flips into garden in '80mph race' that left one dead and 6 injured

Horrific footage captures a car career over a garden hedge and land in a mangled heap on a driveway in a fatal crash .

after a silver Volkswagen Eos convertible, grey Alfa Romeo GT and silver Nissan Qashqai collided on the country road last night.

Jason Pearce, who lives at the home in Bracklesam Bay near Chichester, West Sussex, told Mirror Online: "The cars came flying through a hedge at 80mph onto my drive.

"We were watching TV. I thought it was an earthquake.

"One car had hit a parked car. I rushed over and there were cars all over the place.

"There was another car on fire."

Sussex Police are investigating the cause of the crash, which has left another man, also in the VW, fighting for life in hospital.

But Jason, a 48-year-old sales manager, alleges the cars were travelling at around 80mph at around 8.45pm.

"Police estimate that to hit a telegraph pole and hit a parked car like that, they must have been going 80 to 100mph.

"I believe it was joy racers. It happens all the time here.

"I could have quite easily been in the garden with my daughter," the dad-of-one said.

No arrests have been in relation to the smash.

Jason, originally from Windsor, Berkshire, claims seasonal workers at one of several fruit farms in the area were involved in the accident.

He said: "They may have been seasonal workers at a farm nearby.

"They were between 20 and 30 years old I think."

Neighbours say the area has been plagued with drivers speeding along the rural lane for years.

Jason has been in a standoff with Tory-controlled West Sussex County Council for some time in his campaign for new traffic calming measures to be installed.

In emails seen by Mirror Online, he begs the council for new installations, such as cameras, but is told these are "not supported".

Jason, who moved to the home in February 2016, added: "It is sad it has come to this. A fatality has happened.

"I had been getting no joy with the council. It is not good enough."

A West Sussex County Council spokesman said: “Our thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of those involved in the collision.

“We take the issue of road safety on our county’s roads extremely seriously and we continually monitor all our roads.

“It would be wrong to comment on the incident as it is currently under police investigation. We will support the police investigation in every way we can and we will await the outcome of the investigation.”

Now residents in the village and surrounding area have this morning created a petition to campaign for stronger speed measures.

The B2198 runs past fruit farms to the coast at Bracklesam Bay to Birdham, which is just south of Chichester.

"This is truly horrific. That road scares the hell out of me as the speeding is constant," said another resident on Twitter .

"Someone tailgated me the other day and then sped ahead as they couldn’t cope with me being just under the 40mph speed limit. Something serious has to be done."

Another resident wrote: "After multiple accidents along this road tonight was by far the worst, two cars ended end crashing through my front fence at high speed and ended up on top of each other in my drive.

"This road has become so dangerous and last nights horrific accident just goes to show how dangerous this now is. This affects everyone living in Bracklesham, East and West Wittering as this could have easily been you just driving in and out of the village."

A spokeswoman for South East Coast Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 8.45pm to reports of a multi-vehicle collision leaving one vehicle on fire in Bracklesham Lane Bracklesham Bay.

"We sent a number of resources included two air ambulances.

"Two patients, with serious injuries, were flown to Southampton hospital while three other patients, with less serious injuries, were taken to St Richards hospital."

Sussex Police  said: "We are urgently seeking witnesses to a multi-vehicle crash on the B2198 Bracklesham Lane, near Chichester.

"It happened shortly before 8.45pm on Wednesday (31 July) and involved a silver Volkswagen Eos convertible, a grey Alfa Romeo GT and a silver Nissan Qashqai.

"Sadly, a man in the VW sustained fatal injuries and another man in the same vehicle was seriously injured. He is currently in a critical condition sat Southampton General Hospital.

"Five other people involved were injured to varying degrees, from minor to serious, and three hospitals across the south were used to treat them.

"We would like to talk to anyone who saw what happened, in particular those who may have dash-cam footage, or who noticed any of the vehicles being driven shortly beforehand.

"They are asked to report details  online , by email to  collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk  or by phone on 101, quoting Operation Coleford."
