The Chicago Red Stars have made history in the National Women's Soccer League by signing forward Mallory Swanson to a groundbreaking four-year contract, with an option for a fifth year. While the financial details of the deal remain undisclosed, the team has declared it to be the 'most lucrative agreement' in the league's history.

Reports from CBS Sports estimate that Swanson's contract is worth around $400,000 per year, amounting to nearly $2 million over the course of the contract. This significant financial commitment demonstrates the Red Stars' belief in Swanson's abilities and her importance to the team's success.

Swanson, who has been with the Red Stars since 2021, has already made an impact on the field. In her 51 appearances for the team, she has scored 18 goals and provided 10 assists. Her consistent performance and contribution to the team's success have earned her this historic contract.

The 25-year-old Swanson had an exceptional year representing the United States team in 2023 until her unfortunate injury. During an exhibition match against Ireland in April, she injured a tendon in her left knee, abruptly ending her season. Prior to the injury, Swanson was the leading scorer for the national team, with seven goals in addition to a six-game scoring streak. In total, she has amassed an impressive record of 32 goals and 27 assists in 88 appearances for the United States.

After undergoing surgery and missing the Women's World Cup last summer, Swanson focused on her recovery and rehabilitation. She returned to training with the Red Stars in October, eager to regain her form and continue making a difference on the pitch.

Swanson's return to the Red Stars coincides with a time of change for the team. Last September, Chicago Cubs co-owner Laura Ricketts purchased the Red Stars, injecting new energy into the organization. Additionally, the team appointed Lorne Donaldson, the former coach of the Jamaican national team, as their coach. Interestingly, Swanson had the opportunity to play under Donaldson during her youth years in Colorado.

Aside from the professional aspect, the signing of this historic contract also keeps Swanson close to her husband, Dansby Swanson, who plays for the Chicago Cubs. This additional personal factor likely played a role in her decision to extend her contract with the Red Stars.

The Red Stars organization is thrilled with Swanson's commitment to the team and the city of Chicago. Red Stars President Karen Leetzow expressed her excitement about having Swanson on board, emphasizing her leadership qualities both on and off the field. Leetzow is looking forward to working with Swanson to cultivate a championship-winning team.

Swanson's contract surpasses the previous record-setting deal signed by Maria Sanchez with the Houston Dash. Sanchez's three-year, $1.5 million agreement held the title for the league's most lucrative contract, but Swanson's new deal has taken that honor.

With this groundbreaking contract, Mallory Swanson has become a trailblazer in the National Women's Soccer League. Her dedication, skill, and resilience have propelled her to new heights, and the Chicago Red Stars are confident that her presence and leadership will contribute to the team's pursuit of championship success.
