Chicago rapper FBG Duck has reportedly been killed in a drive-by shooting in the city’s Gold Coast area.
Police have confirmed that three people were shot, one of them fatally, on East Oak Street at around 4.37pm on Tuesday.
On social media, friends and family members have identified the deceased as FBG Duck, whose real name is Carlton D. Weekly.
It is understood that FBG Duck, 26, had been shopping in the area with two friends.
East Oak Street is typically known for some of Chicago’s most expensive stores and was busy with shoppers at the time of the shooting.
Chicago Police Department confirmed that a 26-year-old male was shot in the chest, the groin and the neck.
He was transported to Northwestern Hospital and pronounced dead just after 5 p.m., the force added.
Police said that two cars pulled up, and four individuals got out and opened fire, striking the three victims, before fleeing the scene.
A 36-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman were also taken to hospitals in the city. Both are in a serious condition, police added.
Both vehicles fled westbound on Oak Street, and no suspects are in custody. A weapon has been recovered from the scene.
Chicago has been gripped by a wave of violent crime in recent months against a backdrop of protests and the economic fall out from the coronavirus crisis.
Shootings were up 71 per cent in May compared with the same time last year, according to CPD figures released in June.
In the six months from January to June this year, some 329 people were killed in the city.
In the same period last year, 246 people were killed, representing a rise of around 34 per cent, according to the data.
There were 978 shootings from January to June in 2019. In the same six-month period this year, 1,384 people have been shot.
Last week, a carjacking suspect who had already been detained by police shot three officers as they attempted to transfer him into custody.
The gunman was being taken out of a patrol van and walked into Northwest Side police station at around 9.30am on Thursday when he opened fire, hitting the officers.
Police returned fire but no one was killed in the shoot out. It was not immediately clear if the suspect used his own gun or wrested one from the officers.
President Donald Trump has threatened to send federal officers to the city in a bid to quell the violence. But Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot has said she will do everything in her power to prevent the move.
