Chicago has initiated the process of relocating residents from an encampment near the downtown area in preparation for the upcoming Democratic National Convention. The move is aimed at ensuring the well-being of individuals residing in the encampment and to prevent any last-minute disruptions to their living situations.
The Director of Public Affairs with the Chicago Department of Family and Support Services, stated that residents at the Des Plaines and Roosevelt site are being transitioned into shelters. This proactive approach is being taken in anticipation of the DNC, scheduled to take place from August 19 to August 22 at the United Center, which is less than 3 miles away from the encampment.
The encampment, visible from the busy Dan Ryan Expressway, is one of the city's most prominent sites. Residents are being relocated to one of two city shelters, where they will receive essential services such as counseling, medical care, and assistance in accessing resources for securing long-term housing.
