A Chicago man was sentenced to 60 years in prison for accidentally gunning down and killing a 25-year-old student who had arrived in the city just hours prior to the fatal shooting.

Shane Colombo, from Sun City, California, moved to Chicago on Sept. 2, 2018, to be with his fiancé and begin the psychology Ph.D. program at Northwestern University, ABC 7 reported.

While he was out grocery shopping, he was struck by three stray bullets and pronounced dead at the hospital. The shooter, Diante Speed, 26, was targeting another man who fled on foot.

Speed was arrested in 2019 and charged with the first-degree murder of Colombo.

On Tuesday, he was sentenced to 60 years in prison, according to ABC 7.
