The Chicago Bears are one of the five NFL teams still looking for their next head coach. They’ve already conducted a wide range of interviews with guys like Aaron Glenn, Ben Johnson, and even Pete Carroll. But they’re holding out hope that they’ll be able to speak to with one other high profile coach, as it is being reported that they are interested in Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman.
Freeman has been in his current position since 2021. He has led the Fighting Irish to a 33-9 record in his 42 games coached thus far, but is on the brink of the biggest accomplishment of his coaching career. Notre Dame has won their first three playoff games and have advanced to the 2025 National Championship, looking for the first title for the school since 1988. They’ll take on Ohio State next Monday, and will enter the game as heavy 9.5-point underdogs.
The Bears Want To Interview Marcus Freeman
His name hasn’t been mentioned much when it comes to NFL head coaching gigs, but the Bears have apparently held Marcus Freeman in high regard for some time. According to Bears insider Ben Devine, Chicago has been doing extensive research on Freeman for months. While it is unlikely that he’ll agree to an interview during Notre Dame’s preparation for the National Championship, the NFL team 90 miles away is holding out hope.

Freeman would make for an interesting NFL head coaching candidate. He just turned 39 years old, and had no prior head coaching experience before his time in South Bend. But if his team is able to overcome the heavy odds stacked against them next Monday night, then he’ll elevate his status as one of the hot young names on the market.
But does he have any interest in being on the market at all? He won’t make any comments during a preparation week, so it will remain unknown if he desires coaching in the NFL any time soon. But as Devine reports, it “wouldn’t be a shock” if he at least considers it.
The Bears fired Matt Eberflus mid-season after he went 14-32 in his 46 games in Chicago. Interim coach Thomas Brown went 1-4 in the five games to close out the 2024 season.
