More than 7 inches of snow was reported in some areas north and northwest of Chicago overnight, with the worst hit places in Lake, McHenry, Boone and Winnebago counties.
Chicago and areas close to the city saw a lot less, with 1.2 inches of snow reported at O’Hare International Airport and 1.5 inches in Geneva, according to the National Weather Service.
Rockford recorded 7.3 inches, the first time the city has seen more than 6 inches of snow on a March 9 since 1993, the weather service said. Nearly 6 inches were reported in Woodstock and Hebron and more than 7 8 inches in Bull Valley.
The weather service said road conditions for the morning commute “are mainly just wet or lightly slush-covered with improving weather conditions expected through the morning.”
The weather service had issued a winter weather advisory for the Chicago area from Thursday evening through Friday morning.
More snow is expected Saturday night and Sunday with accumulations of 1 to 2 inches. “A wintry pattern will continue through the weekend with another shot of snow due to arrive Saturday night, and then chilly temperatures to start the workweek,” the weather service said in a statement.
The highs at the start of the week will be in the mid-30s.
