The Chevy Bolt EV and EUV went out of production in December of 2023, but that doesn't mean they're gone. First, they will live forever in our hearts. Second, a new one is coming later this year. Third, the old ones are actually still available on some lots. Chevy managed to sell 13 Bolts last quarter, according to General Motors' first quarter 2025 sales report.
The Bolt was a relatively unsung EV hero, the first affordable electric car to cover over 250 miles on a charge. It beat the Tesla Model 3 to market, albeit with none of the Tesla's sex appeal or whiz-bang technology. It was just simple, reliable, affordable transportation designed for practicality and low cost-of ownership. Unsurprisingly, Americans didn't bite. Buyers have shown little interest in small, affordable cars, and less so in small, affordable EVs. They prefer overbuilt SUVs and four-figure car payments. The introduction of a not-quite-convincing "Electric Utility Vehicle" crossover-adjacent model helped Bolt sales, but it never quite captured the American imagination.
It did capture many EV fans' hearts. As the only reasonable alternative to Tesla for years, then the only truly affordable 250-mile EV, it had folk hero energy. I've recommended them to many people, and everyone I know who has one loves it. They're a favorite among EV pioneers. I never quite loved the Bolt myself—it wasn't particularly interesting to drive, nor to be in—but I'm glad it existed. I'm also glad GM is bringing it back this year, with an all-new model based on the company's latest generation of technology. I love the software in my Blazer EV, but I hate that it's a 5,300-lb behemoth with terrible efficiency and an absurd starting price.
More importantly, because GM has improved its EV technology and scale immensely in the eight years since the original Bolt, it should be a far more compelling affordable EV. That's the exact kind of car we need right now, and I hope GM can deliver. The inclusion of real fast-charging capability will be a game-changer, too, as the last Bolt wasn't a great road-tripper.
Still, while used ones remain the default non-Tesla option for budget-conscious buyers, it's fun to see that new Bolts still exist. By the end, factoring in tax credits, you could get one for under $25,000 if you paid MSRP. Sometimes far lower than that. Given that Americans are skeptical of small EVs and that remaining Bolts have sat on lots for at least 15 months, dealers with remaining inventory may be willing to give you a better deal than that.
According to Autotrader, there are seven Bolt EUVs and two Bolt EVs still for sale new in America. They're all pretty spread out, often away from major EV markets, so you might need to plan a slow-going road trip if you still want one. If you do, though, you better act fast. The original Bolt and Bolt EUV are finally about to be extinct on dealer lots, and who knows if the new one's original timeline will survive the car market's tariff chaos.
