Cheryl fans wounded after Geordie Girls Aloud star is replaced in West End show

Geordie superstar Cheryl left fans absolutely gutted over the weekend, as the former Girls Aloud singer pulled out of her role in '2:22 A Ghost Story' in the West End with short notice on Sunday.

The 39-year-old found herself replaced by stand-in Gemma Yates-Round, shortly after the announcement on the show's official website.

Without further explanation, a statement read: "Please note that Cheryl will not be performing on Sunday 19th March."

The Daily Star reports that the lack of explanation for her replacement led to a number of disappointed attendees speculating on social media - while heavily praising Gemma's substitute performance. One commented on Twitter: "So we went to see @222aghoststory today and found out @CherylOfficial was off! But fair play to Gemma Yates-Round you did amazing!! All cast were outstanding!"

Another added: "I specifically avoided this week as it's Mother's Day and Bear's birthday, didn't want to risk it!" while a third, penned: "I’m glad she is taking the day off and I bet my she will be taking Bear’s birthday off as well (unless she decided to do his birthday in combo with Mother’s Day).

A fourth, rounded off: "Sad @CherylOfficial wasn’t in todays @222aghoststory but Gemma was excellent."

Former X Factor favourite Cheryl made her debut on the show last month, following on in the footsteps of Lily Allen. She felt a whirlwind of emotion on her opening night, after receiving a standing ovation in appreciation of her performance.

The very same evening, Cheryl was supported by an audience featuring GA band-mates Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh. Giovanni Fletcher, who has previously played the exact same role as Cheryl in an earlier edition of the show, was also present alongside McFly husband, Tom Fletcher.

Cheryl will continue in her role of the West End show until April 23.
