Cherry scone is pride of Perth bakers shop after Murrays take silver award in national competition

Murrays Bakers in Perth was pleased to get two wins at this year’s prestigious Scottish Baker of the Year Awards.

In the 2023/24 awards held in Glasgow at the weekend, it wasn’t the popular pies so much as the sweet bites that got the judges drooling.

At a time when everybody seems to be talking about the Stone of Scone, Murrays cherry scone was crowned with a silver award, named a winner in the scone stakes not just regionally, but nationally.

Also royally rewarded was the caramel slice, made daily by the long-established business in South Street, which got a silver award in the regional competition for best individual cake.

Winners were announced at a gala celebration in Glasgow last weekend organised by Scottish Bakers, which supports and protects the interests of Scotland’s bakery trade.

Bakers across the country were each asked to put forward up to 12 of their star products to be taste tested by 50 industry experts.

“Each and every winner should be justifiably proud,” said a Scottish Bakers spokesperson.

“We hope that for every well-deserved prize there is a corresponding business boost. Well done to you all.”
