Cher doesn't "drink much" after getting so drunk in her 20s she thought she was dying.
The 78-year-old pop superstar has revealed she cut back on her wild partying after a heavy night out when she was younger left her fearing the worst and she went to her doctor to ask if she would survive.
She told The Times newspaper: "I don’t drink much" and added of her visit to the doctor: "Oh yeah, I was really frightened."
The singer went on to reveal she has the occasional glass of Champagne but only to keep her friends happy.
She added: "Occasionally I’ll have a glass of Champagne with my friends just to shut them up, because otherwise they’ll make fun of me and be a major pain in the a**."
Cher also told the publication she also gave up drugs when she was in her 20s after having a bad experience as a teenager.
She said: "There was one time when I was a teenager and all my friends were taking this drug, a Quaalude or something, so I took it too.
"I was so messed up that they parked me outside in a car while they all went into a disco. That’s when I realised: drugs and me were never going to be great.
"I smoked pot a couple of times. Didn’t like it. I’ve been surrounded by alcoholics and drug addicts all my life and it’s never appealed to me."
Cher has lifted the lid on her life in her new book 'Cher: The Memoir, Part One' and in the interview, she admitted she hasn't actually read it because she doesn't want to relive her old stories again.
She explained: "[I] just didn’t. It’s gonna be what it’s gonna be. It took me eight years and three attempts and I still wish I did it one more time, but it was killing me.
"Every day, all day long … Didn’t wanna hear those stories any more."
