BURROWS DIAMOND is fancied to return to winning ways in the British EBF Mares’ Novices’ Handicap Chase Final (2.05) at Cheltenham.
The seven-year-old daughter of Diamond Boy drew a blank from her first four runs over fences – all over two miles – but hasn’t looked back since being upped in trip.
Burrows Diamond landed a two-and-a-half-mile mares’ handicap chase at the start of January, and followed up in a similar event for novices over an additional two furlongs at Uttoxeter three weeks later.
Back at two and a half, but taking on male opposition, Burrows Diamond finished 18 lengths clear of the third when a three-length second to Soldier Of Destiny, and, back against her own gender, can defy a 1lb nudge up the weights.
As Newmarket’s Craven meeting comes to an end, CAROLUS MAGNUS gets the vote to take his record at the track to 3-3 by beating nine rivals for the Pat Smullen Memorial Handicap (3.00).
Holy Roman Emperor’s son, seven-furlong maiden winner at the same fixture 12 months ago, signed off for 2021 with a two-length margin in a course-and-distance handicap in September.
There is a 5lb rise in the weights to deal with here, but the Andrew Balding trainee looks the type to continue on the up as a four-year-old and has strong claims of a successful comeback.
