Cheltenham prepare for Duff exit, Oxford United seal crucial deal - League One headlines

The news that Cheltenham Town manager Michael Duff is in the frame for two managerial vacancies leads the latest League One headlines.

Duff has had a huge impact at Whaddon Road but he has options at clubs in League One and the Championship.

Elsewhere, Portsmouth and Oxford United have agreed new contracts with important players, and while the transfer market may be moving slowly with Bristol Rovers yet to announce a deal, Forest Green Rovers have settled on their Kane Wilson replacement.

Here is a roundup of the latest news from across the third tier on Tuesday, June 7...

Cheltenham braced for Duff departure

Cheltenham are making plans for life after their highly-rated manager Michael Duff with the 44-year-old in the frame for two managerial vacancies.

The former Burnley defender held talks with League One rivals Barnsley on Monday and he was interviewed by Blackpool today (Tuesday) following the surprise departure of manager Neil Critchley for Aston Villa's coaching staff.

Duff has enjoyed huge success in charge of the Robins, leading the club to the League Two title in 2020/21 and followed it up with their highest ever finish in the third tier last season.

Gloucestershire Live's Jon Palmer reports Cheltenham are preparing for Duff's departure.

Ex-Gas striker free to go

Former Rovers striker Tyler Smith has been told he can leave Hull City, with the club also allowing Mallik Wilks to depart. The latter has plenty of interest in League One, having starred in Hull's promotion campaign of 2020/21.

Smith spent half a season on loan with the Gas, brought from Sheffield United by Graham Coughlan, scoring three goals in 20 league appearances before the arrival of Ben Garner, who returned the player to his parent club in January 2021. Smith had broken his foot after kicking a bottle in training.

The following year, Smith scored seven times while on loan a Swindon Town, and that was enough to earn him a move to the Championship with Hull, but the 23-year-old struggled, scoring just twice in 25 appearances and he will be available for transfer this summer.

Wilks, meanwhile, scored 22 goals in Hull's promotion campaign and is on the radar of Sheffield Wednesday, according to Examiner Live.

Forest Green sign their Kane Wilson replacement

Forest Green Rovers announced the signing of impressive wing-back Corey O'Keefe on Tuesday.

With the likely departure of star man Kane Wilson in mind, FGR have quickly tied up a deal for the Ex-Rochdale defender.

The 24-year-old was excellent for Dale last season, scoring twice, adding nine assists and offering an attacking threat from out wide.

"We played against Rochdale twice with Notts County in the FA Cup and Corey was the stand-out player in both games," FGR head coach Ian Burchnall told the club's website.

Oxford sign up their captain

Oxford United's hopes ahead of the new season have been given a big boost with the news club captain Elliott Moore has signed a new three-year contract with the club.

The 25-year-old has been a pivotal member of Karl Robinson's squad at the Kassam Stadium, offering aerial dominance with his 6ft 5in frame.

“He is an outstanding defender and also a terrific role model and a natural leader. He has the respect of everyone at the club and I think he has his best years still ahead of him,“ Robinson told the club's website.

Portsmouth secure Jacobs' services

Danny Cowley has shared his delight after Portsmouth announced a new one-year contract had been agreed with star winger Micahel Jacobs.

The former Wigan wideman was impressive for Pompey last season and Cowley made it a priority to keep the 30-year-old at Fratton Park for another year.

“We’re really pleased to be able to extend Michael’s contract because he played a pivotal role in our good run of form at the back end of last season," Cowley told the club's website.

“He brings quality to our side and has an amazing ability to find space and unlock opposition defences to create and score goals."
