Galopin Des Champs was denied a historic third successive Cheltenham Gold Cup as Inothewayurthinkin triumphed in the race of the week.
With history on the line, Galopin Des Champs, Paul Townend and Willie Mullins were denied by a sensational ride as jockey Mark Walsh marshalled the Gavin Patrick Cromwell-trained seven-year-old to an emphatic win.
“I'm dancing inside,” said Walsh. “I can't believe it. He jumped well, just missed the ditch. Paul [Townend on Galopin Des Champs] was on my outside and early on, he missed a few fences and I just thought he wasn't happy. This boy [Inothewayurthinkin] has had to grow up over the last year. Gavin Cromwell is a genius having him spot on for today. I'm delighted.”
On a day of upsets with plenty of other fascinating contests, the 100/1 shot Poniros pulled off the biggest shock of the week by winning the JCB Triumph Hurdle in the opening race of the day, while the Grade 1 Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle saw another Mullins-Townend triumph with Jasmin De Vaux taking victory.

Head through the gates at Cheltenham Racecourse and look to the left. There you’ll find a bronze statue of the legendary AP McCoy, a 20-time champion jockey and two-time Cheltenham Gold Cup winner. Behind him there is another statue, this one is of a horse. Just as legendary as McCoy but arguably even more successful. It is Best Mate, a triple Gold Cup winner who triumphed in three successive races between 2002 and 2004 to write his name in the history books and get his likeness sculpted in bronze.
Walk past Best Mate and head up the stairs to the viewing balcony adjacent to the Princess Royal Grandstand. Here you’ll find Golden Miller. The statue is smaller but the honours greater. He is the most successful racehorse to grace the Cheltenham Festival. The only horse to win five successive Gold Cups, which he did almost a century ago between 1932 and 1936.
To emulate them is a near impossible task… enter Galopin Des Champs.

Cheltenham Gold Cup horse Corbett’s Cross dies after suffering fatal injury during race
17:49 , Mike JonesGold Cup horse Corbett’s Cross has died after suffering a fatal injury during the feature race of the week at Cheltenham Festival.
The iconic race, which saw odds-on favourite Galopin Des Champs beaten and denied a famous hat-trick by Inothewayurthinkin, was left with a sad finish for fans after a heavy fall for Corbett’s Cross.
A statement from Cheltenham read: “In our fifth race of the day, Corbett’s Cross was immediately attended to by our veterinary professionals, but sadly sustained a fatal injury. Our heartfelt condolences are with his connections.”

“It’s disappointing to get beaten, he's back, he's fine and it will give Gavin Cromwell something to shout about for a long time.

Cheltenham Gold Cup tips
15:55 , Luke BakerIt’s a clean sweep from our experts when tipping up this Gold Cup...
Ruby Walsh’s tip (via Paddy Power): Galopin Des Champs (8/15)
“I hope Galopin Des Champs wins as he’s an incredible horse. Inothewayurthinkin is the danger to him as he’s guaranteed to stay and he’ll come home well. Galopin Des Champs should win as he should have far too many gears for the rest of these. A forecast of Galopin Des Champs to beat Inothewayurthinkin could be an extra value pick.”
Sam Turner’s tip: Galopin Des Champs (8/15)
“A week ago, the prospect of a soft surface and a real test at the trip looked to be perfect conditions for Galopin Des Champs to complete an historic hat-trick in the blue riband event. However, a dry forecast and the likelihood of spring ground have enhanced the chances of King George hero Banbridge seeing out today’s trip, while the supplemented Inothewayurthinkin, seven lengths behind Galopin Des Champs at Leopardstown, has added further depth to a race which looked a little thin on competition a fortnight ago.
“The reigning champion should still have too much class for this field as he is so tactically versatile and jumps brilliantly in the main, although after some of the high- profile jumping failures this week, nothing is taken for granted. The best outsiders look to be Ahoy Senior, who is reported in good shape following a wind operation, and The Real Whacker who wasn’t disgraced behind Banbridge on Boxing Day at Kempton. Backing them each-way in the markets without the favourite could be the way to go.”
Oli Bell’s tip (via Sky Bet:) Galopin Des Champs (8/15)
“Friday at Cheltenham, Gold Cup Day, the blue ribbon of the week where Galopin Des Champs is hoping to make history and win three Gold Cups. I think he’ll do it – I love the horse, and I think he deserves his place in the pantheon of Cheltenham greats.”
Cheltenham Gold Cup odds
15:51 , Luke BakerJust nine horses in the Gold Cup this year. Can anyone challenge Galopin Des Champs? Both the JJ Slevin-ridden Banbridge and Mark Walsh on Inothewayurthinkin will fancy their chances.
Galopin Des Champs is the prohibitive favourite and here are the odds (via Oddschecker):
- Galopin Des Champs 8/15
- Banbridge 15/2
- Inothewayurthinkin 15/2
- Montys Star 12/1
- Corbetts Cross 14/1
- The Real Whacker 33/1
- Gentlemansgame 40/1
- Ahoy Senor 50/1
- Royale Pagaille 100/1
Galopin Des Champs poised and primed for next act of Cheltenham glory
15:44 , Luke BakerWhat does it mean to make history? To achieve such accomplishments in a lifetime that others are compelled to scribe down your achievements so that future generations know how extraordinary you were.
Most of us don’t come close to such recognition but for a select few there are moments when history comes knocking, when expectation weighs heavily on the shoulders and the spotlight of legacy shines firmly on them. This is the fate that awaits jockey Paul Townend and Galopin Des Champs at the Cheltenham Festival this week.

Cheltenham Gold Cup
15:41 , Luke BakerRight, it’s time to focus on the big race of the week - the Cheltenham Gold Cup, which is around 20 minutes away.
Galopin Des Champs going for history with a third straight Gold Cup triumph. He’s be just the fifth horse in history to manage that.
Willie Mullins has had 10 winners this week, equalling his own Cheltenham record, and how fitting would it be if Galopin des Champs broke that record...

15:31 , Luke BakerThe Mullins-Townend dup proving unstoppable this week. Does that bode well for Galopin Des Champs in the Gold Cup?
Victory for them with Jasmin De Vaux, who won the Bumper previously at Cheltenham. A two-time winner at the Festival. No mean feat.

Wingmen and Derryhassen Paddy have about a two-length lead over the rest of the field but long way still to go
3.20: Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle
15:23 , Luke BakerFavourite The Big Westerner in midfield early on as they’re pretty well bunched. Wingmen and Derryhassen Paddy the leaders as the pace is decent
3.20: Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle
15:21 , Luke BakerAnd we’re off in the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle! A maximum 20-strong field going in this one.
We’re away first time - the starts have been much better after yesterday’s debacle
3.20: Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle
15:20 , Luke BakerWill it be yet another Willie Mullins win, with Jasmin De Vaux the best bet? But Jet Blue’s odds are coming well in - he’s almost level with The Big Westerner as joint favourite.
James Reveley is aboard Jet Blue, who is trained by David Cottin. The unbeaten Derryhassen Paddy also a chance
3.20: Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle odds
15:10 , Luke BakerWe’ve nearly reached the pinnacle of the week - the Gold Cup. One race to go before that kicks off at 4pm.

Disbelief in Dublin after Poniros shock

Cheltenham CEO Guy Lavender, speaking about this year's festival
14:30 , Mike JonesHe told Radio 5 Live: “It's been amazing. It's been epic racing with some enjoyable, good crowds. It's been a festival in its truest sense. I've loved it, it's been my first festival in charge. I came from Lord's cricket ground so it's different but loving it so far and we hope we can cap it with a brilliant day today.
"I was pretty chilled out the fortnight before. The day before, the enormity of it sunk in. I walked the course the morning of the Tuesday and you start to get the sense of it's coming. It's a massive racecourse but the team come in and we delivered really well. It was a difficult festival last year, everyone acknowledged it and we've made a number of improvements. We're really smashing it out of the park so far this year.
"Start with the racing, we made some changes to the races to see it more competitive. There haven't been a lot of short-priced favourites winning everything. We've got 7,000 cars on hard standing, people can take more drinks to watch the racing.
"There are a lot of discounted tickets for other meetings. The festival is the festival. They come here and they have a great time even if they are not hardcore racing fans. It's vibrant and an iconic sporting event."

Owner Kenny Alexander reacts to Kargese win
14:16 , Mike JonesHe told BBC Radio 5 Live: "She was second last year and she ran against Sir Gino, troubled him. It's a tough race and she won as we hoped she would. I couldn't believe it. Phenomenal.

'I saw the blue coming and was thinking is that one of mine?'
13:46 , Mike JonesMore from Willie Mullins who told BBC Radio 5 Live: "I know my owner probably had some pounds on it but I didn't give him any advice. I don't think I've ever given him a serious gallop, it was more for a nice experience for him.
"He's done a good bit of jumping at home. We gave him a break and brought him back in for the spring. I didn't think he'd be sharp enough for this. I saw the blue coming and was thinking is that one of mine? That shows where his flat racing experience comes in for this.
"That was always the plan and it's why we've run all of these horses. I thought he might be a nice horse for next season. We couldn't run him and I said we'd run him over here. We'll probably go to Punchestown and then Ascot. We bought him as a multi-purpose horse."
Mullins shocked by result

The final day of the 2025 Cheltenham Festival is underway.
BHA defends series of false starts at Cheltenham
13:05 , Lawrence OstlereBritish Horseracing Authority starter Robbie Supple has defended existing procedures after a series of unsatisfactory starts at the Cheltenham Festival.
Tuesday's Ultima Handicap Chase required three attempts to get underway while Wednesday's Queen Mother Champion Chase had a standing start, a factor which Nico de Boinville felt had impacted on eventual second and hot favourite Jonbon's chances.
There was further incident in the very first race on day three when Willie Mullins' Maughreen whipped around as the runners were sent on their way at the second time of asking, putting paid to her chances.
After finishing second aboard Sixandahalf in the opening Ryanair Mares' Novices' Hurdle in which the Maughreen incident occurred, Keith Donoghue said: "I think the starters are trying to stay with the rules that they have when they have seven runners, but with 24 runners there, you're not going to get them all to walk in in a line.
"I think they have to use their heads sometimes and just drop the flag and let them go when it looks reasonable enough."
