A punter was celebrating a six-figure windfall after pulling off an enterprising long range punt first fashioned as long ago as Christmas 2021.
Galopin Des Champs guaranteed the bet was landed, securing a payout of over £100,000, with his victory in the Cheltenham Gold Cup on Friday.
The Willie Mullins-trained horse was returned at a starting price of 7-5, but the William Hill customer had secured much bigger odds for the ante-post wager.
The first bet, placed all the way back on Christmas Eve 2021, was a £10 each-way double on Constitution Hill to win the Champion Hurdle at 25-1 and Galopin Des Champs to win the Gold Cup at 33-1, which returned £26,520.
The second was perhaps even more speculative, with a £10 four-fold placed in March last year on Desert Crown to win the Derby at 40-1, Tuesday to win the Oaks at 8-1, Constitution Hill to win the Champion Hurdle at 2-1 and Galopin Des Champs to win the Gold Cup at 7-2. That wager returned £74,722.50.
It is third successful accumulator bet reported during the Cheltenham Festival by Hills who also paid out nearly £220,000 on Thursday and £40,000 on Tuesday from a 50p acca.
William Hill spokesperson, Lee Phelps, said: “One of our customers has had it right off on Friday with two extraordinary bets both copping netting them over £100k.
“The first £10 each-way bet won them over £26k, while the second £10 four-fold won them over £74k, so all-in-all it’s been a Friday they’ll remember for a long time to come.”
