Cheltenham cyber security firm opens new facility, creating jobs

A Gloucestershire-based cyber security firm has launched a new digital forensics lab, which it says will help it to create around 10 new jobs.

CDS Defence and Security said its new facility at its Government-approved base in Cheltenham, where spy agency GCHQ is headquartered, would enable authorities and commercial clients to investigate cyber incidents.

The consultancy, part of the Yorkshire-headquartered Bailie Group, said the lab had been two years in the making, and it would be looking to recruit nine staff to work there over the next year.

Martin Nash, head of cyber security and information assurance (CS&IA) services at CDS, said: “Digital forensics is a branch of forensic science that focuses on identifying, acquiring, processing, analysing, and reporting on data stored electronically. In the event of a cyber incident, organisations need their devices to paint the picture of what really took place. And this is what our new facility does.”

He added: “Law enforcement have publicly declared significant backlogs in the digital forensic evidential examination of electronic devices, and we’re here to support them in tackling this effectively. Our digital forensics lab enables us to maintain the integrity in the chain of evidence for devices, while quickly and efficiently analysing and reporting our findings with accurate results.”

The expansion comes as the fast-growing firm said it had already tripled its workforce to 36 since the start of 2020. CDS said its cyber security and information assurance division had recorded revenue of £3.25m in 2022, with bosses expected this to reach £4.2m by the end of this year.

As a whole CDS, which consists of four different business units, said it had continued to increase its revenue year-on-year, growing to around £15m in 2022, with “ambitious plans” for further growth.
