Chelsea Women player ratings as Emma Hayes' side edge past Reading to stay top of the WSL

Jelena Canković starred as Chelsea won a ninth straight Women's Super League game by edging out Reading in a five-goal thriller at Kingsmeadow.

In snowy conditions, the Blues scored three times before the break with Cankovic at the double. Reading did score twice in two minutes near the hour mark to threaten a fightback. However, Emma Hayes' team saw out a nervy finish to restore their three-point lead at the top of the table.

It was a crucial win for the defending champions who know they return after the WSL Christmas break for a crunch London derby with Arsenal in the New Year.

Player Ratings

Ann-Katrin Berger - Potentially could have done better on the first goal, letting the ball slide under her, but the conditions were a nightmare for goalkeepers. 6

Mille Bright - Didn't put a foot wrong. Remained composed on the ball despite the slippery conditions. Won everything in the air as usual. 8

Magdalena Eriksson - As consistent a display as ever from the skipper. Constantly offering her teammates encouragement and driving the side on. 7

Eve Perisset - Brought composure and style on the ball, even in the second half when Reading started to hit back. Looks to be improving every week. 7

Niamh Charles - Both goals came from down her side, but the wing-back had done well to keep battling after picking up a nasty knock before the break. 6

Johanna Rytting Kaneryd - Looked offside for the opening goal but it was still a clever run to gift Kirby the easiest finish of the night. A good display. 7

Sophie Ingle - Struggled for space after the break but her energy and endeavour was crucial on a night where the weather made slick football nearly impossible. 6

Erin Cuthbert - Provided a superb cross for Cankovic's second. Nearly gave away a penalty early doors, but apart from that, this was another excellent performance from the 24-year-old. 7

Jelena Cankovic - Showed how deadly she can be when deployed as a No. 10. Her movement for the third goal was outstanding. 9

Fran Kirby - Always seems to produce her best against her former club, and tonight was no different. Reading just couldn't stop her from cutting inside and causing problems. Her goal was simple but it was a classic example of right place, right time. 7

Beth England - Didn't get her goal but it was a positive return to the team for England who never stopped running and causing problems in-behind. Was brought off for Kerr with 20 minutes left. 6

Substitutes: Jess Carter - 6, Sam Kerr - 6, Jessie Fleming - 6
