West Ham United’s controversial disallowed goal in their defeat to Chelsea in September has reportedly been identified as one of six major VAR mistakes made in the Premier League so far this season.
In the Hammers’ 2-1 defeat to London rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on September 3, David Moyes’ side were harshly denied a point after substitute Maxwel Cornet converted minutes after coming on, following Edouard Mendy spilling the ball when denying Jarrod Bowen.
Following a lengthy VAR check, Australian VAR official Jarred Gillett advised referee Andew Madley to overturn his decision after goalkeeper Mendy went down injured during the move, wrongly denying West Ham of a last-gasp 2-2 draw at the home of the five-time Premier League champions.

At the time of the incident, Moyes described it as a “ridiculously bad decision” and now reports from The Sun are saying the incident has been identified as one of six match-changing errors so far this season.
Boxing Day will mark the start of former World Cup final referee Howard Webb’s reign as the head of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) and part of his remit is to increase the effectiveness of VAR, as well as a push to make fewer VAR interventions in matches.
The report suggests that ahead of the restart of the Premier League season, a panel composed of three ex-players and representatives from both the Premier League and the PGMOL have assessed 48 VAR incidents that have so far taken place this season.
The report states that of those, 42 were identified as being correct, but six, including Cornet’s disallowed goal vs Chelsea, were identified as being wrong.
Among the other mistakes highlighted in The Sun’s report are Gabriel Martinelli’s goal for Arsenal against Liverpool, Tyrick Mitchell’s own goal while in action for Crystal Palace against Newcastle United, a failure to send off Tottenham Hotspur’s Cristian Romero for a hair pull on Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella and Spurs deserving a penalty on Ryan Sessegnon following a foul from Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold.
The report also suggests that the Premier League, Ligue 1 and Major League Soccer are all keen on trialling temporary concussion substitutions next season. However, there are concerns that the International Football Associations Board (IFAB) are reluctant to do so amid risk of sending players back onto the pitch earlier than they should.
