Chelsea vs AC Milan tactics: Where Champions League clash will be won and lost

Chelsea head into a Champions League double-header with AC Milan needing a win, and likely two.

After defeat at Dinamo Zagreb - which cost Thomas Tuchel his job - and only a draw at home to Salzburg - in Graham Potter's first game in charge - Chelsea sit bottom of Group E and now twice take on the reigning Serie A champions.

Potter is still trying to work out his best lineup and but knows his side already face an uphill task of reaching the Champions League group stage.

Here's how Nizaar Kinsella believes tonight's game will be won and lost.

Midfield issues

Chelsea might be without Jorginho, who faces a late fitness test. His injury adds to N’Golo Kante’s almost certain absence, so one of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Conor Gallagher could come in to play alongside Mateo Kovacic after their positive cameos against Crystal Palace, where Gallagher scored the winner.

Cucurella and Chilwell together?

Graham Potter hinted that he opted for a back four against Palace due to the illness suffered by Marc Cucurella. The former Brighton defender is an early favourite for Potter, but his presence is a problem for England defender Ben Chilwell. Thomas Tuchel had said they could play together and tonight could be the first time Cucurella plays at centre-back with Chilwell at wing-back.

Potter’s formations

Potter has played two different systems in his first two matches as Chelsea boss. Last night, Milan coach Stefano Pioli admitted he is playing a guessing game as to how the Blues will set up, but that he is helped by having watched Potter’s Brighton teams in the past. Chelsea could play a back-four or five — or possibly even a combination of both. Potter’s formation will dictate which team is picked and how many forwards get on the pitch.
