Chelsea transfer news: Todd Boehly preparing second Malo Gusto bid amid £40m Newcastle hijack

Your morning Chelsea transfer round-up from football.london on Wednesday, January 25.

Improved Gusto offer

Chelsea are pushing for signing number seven of the January transfer window in the form of Lyon right-back Malo Gusto who is seen as the ideal Reece James backup option.

Manchester United have also shown an interest in acquiring the 19-year-old with the Red Devils also struggling for options in the position.

Amid the chase for Gusto, football.london understands that Chelsea have agreed personal terms with the full-back ahead of a potential move. The west London side lodged a first bid earlier this week that was eventually knocked back by Lyon, giving the side a starting point for negotiations.

The Blues now look set to improve their offer for Gusto with a fee between €30-40million (£26.5 35.3m). Lyon are hopeful they can agree favourable terms as a selling club which would include the French side having Gusto back on loan for the remainder of the season.

Gordon battle

Anthony Gordon could be close to an exit from Everton as Newcastle have entered formal talks to sign the attacker, six months after Chelsea showed a strong interest in the summer transfer window. The Blues saw a £45million offer rejected by the Toffees before opting out of a deal due to the high price tag set by Everton which stood at £50million.

Mail Online are reporting that the Magpies have begun formal talks over a possible transfer for Gordon, although they are keeping their options open to other attackers in Europe. The public valuation placed on the club's academy graduate is £60million, however a cheaper deal has been mooted.

A package in the region of £25million plus £15m in add-ons could see an agreement reached. While Joao Felix, Mykhailo Mudryk and Noni Madueke have all arrived since Chelsea's initial interest in Gordon, the Blues could move back in for the winger potentially as part of a clever deal with Everton.

Their report also states Chelsea could purchase Gordon and then immediately loan him back to Everton which could ultimately bring his high price tag down.

This deal would also benefit the Merseyside club as Gordon would be able to help his boyhood club potentially avoid relegation and also give Everton plenty of time to identify and secure a replacement.

Caicedo latest

Brighton star Moises Caicedo continues to be a target of Chelsea as Todd Boehly hopes to end the January transfer window with a new midfielder.

Fabrizio Romano offered the latest update on the 24-year-old on Monday: “Caicedo has new agents now and so Arsenal and Liverpool are also informed on the situation," he said. "Of course, Chelsea have been pushing for weeks and so they remain keen on signing Caicedo. The big issue is Brighton; they want to keep the player.”

The 21-year-old has now given his perspective on the transfer interest in him to Brighton's official website. "I am here, I’m playing every day. Things from outside don’t trouble me, nor does it take that focus away because I’m focused only on here," he said. "I handle [the speculation] well.

"You hear rumours here and there, but I only try to be focused on the club where I am now, the club which opened the doors for me to be playing every week."

Perhaps Brighton's stance on a January departure for Caicedo and his own words could indicate a deal this month can be ruled out. With the Evening Standard reporting that Chelsea will re-open Fernandez talks this month while a move for Caicedo could potentially be revisited at the end of the season.
