Chelsea told how they can hurt Aston Villa in scathing Roy Keane assessment

Graham Potter's previous record when playing Aston Villa was a tight one, one of those matches between teams destined to finish eighth and 15th that could really go either way. Now he's at Chelsea, the stakes are higher, and no such leniency exists.

The new boss has already had the initial ride during his time at Stamford Bridge and has managed back-to-back matches against European giants AC Milan, in a very Graham Potter way, he stayed calm and didn't get flustered by the challenge.

Attention now turns to the Premier League once more, though, and his Chelsea side will be expected to dispatch Villa in a way that was never the standard at Brighton.

Potter has only faced one team more than Villa in his career and only won two times in 10 matches, losing the last two, he will be looking to set that record straight. Steven Gerrard's team currently sit 16th and have only won one of their last seven and two of 13 in a run that has put great pressure on the manager. Potter experienced similar times on the south coast but won't have any sympathy for his fellow manager ahead of the match.

Although Villa have a host of attacking talent, including Danny Ings, Ollie Watkins, Emi Buendia and Phillipe Coutinho, they've scored just seven goals this season. It's an area of the pitch that Roy Keane expects more from "Defensively, they look okay, good goalkeeper, but you pay big money for the attacking players because they win you football games by putting the ball in the back of the net," he said after the 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest. "We saw them against Leeds against ten-men for the majority of the second half, but they didn't create enough chances, were not clinical enough, and you have to have that desire to put the ball in the back of the net."

Chelsea have had their own attacking struggles but have been boosted by the form of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Jamie Carragher thinks that a lack of creativity is hindering them going forward. "They are not getting enough from Coutinho, but in terms of the quality from the wide positions, it was really lacking from the full-backs. You need to get width from your team, and Villa get that from their full-backs, but we have not seen enough quality from them this season."

On the flip side, Chelsea have largely relied on the full-backs for creativity, utilising Reece James to great effect, and his battle up against Ashley Young could prove to be a decisive battle if the Englishman is fit enough to play after going off injured against AC Milan.

Having been shocked at Villa park in the early stages last season, going 1-0 down before a Jorginho double helped Chelsea to a Boxing Day victory, the Blues will be aware of the threat posed by their weekend opponents, but Keane thinks something is currently missing from the squad and didn't hold back: "They do have that quality, but I think it is that lack or courage to try something and can come off the pitch and say it was 1-1, we got lots of shots off and worked the goalkeeper, and he got man of the match, but to see three shots for all of their possession to not try and hurt teams, they have no bottle, and it comes down to individual players."
