Chelsea Supporters’ Trust demand urgent clarification in response to Roman Abramovich statement

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has confirmed in a club statement that he has ceded the care and stewardship of the Blues amid the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The Russian, who has owned the West London side since 2003, has seemingly stepped back from the club, entrusting its care to the Chelsea Foundation.

The statement on the official club website reads: “During my nearly 20-year ownership of Chelsea FC, I have always viewed my role as a custodian of the Club, whose job it is ensuring that we are as successful as we can be today, as well as build for the future, while also playing a positive role in our communities.

“I have always taken decisions with the Club’s best interest at heart. I remain committed to these values.

“That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable Foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea FC.

“I believe that currently they are in the best position to look after the interests of the Club, players, staff, and fans.”

The cryptic nature of the statement has left confusion for some, with doubt casted over the future at Stamford Bridge.

The 55-year-old has taken the decision to step back to protect the club from reputational damage following Russia's attempted invasion of Ukraine. Abramovich has always denied close links to Russian president Vladmir Putin.

In light of the owner’s words, the Chelsea Supporters’ Trust have come out with their own statement, where they demand “urgent clarification” over the changes outlined by Abramovich.

The statement on Twitter says: “The Chelsea Supporters’ Trust is deeply saddened and shocked by the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the subsequent loss of life.

“We note Mr Abramovich’s statement (26.2.22) and are seeking urgent clarification on what this means for the running of Chelsea FC.

“The CST board are ready to work with the trustees of the Chelsea Foundation in order to ensure the long-term interests of the club and supporters.

“We stand with the people of Ukraine.”

It remains to be seen exactly what will come of the revelations in the statement in relation to the future of the football club.

However, with a cup final on the horizon, it may take a few days before the full extent of the decision is understood.
