Chelsea star Mason Mount makes Tottenham redemption claim ahead of Liverpool Carabao Cup final

Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount has described Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Liverpool as a “massive opportunity” to win more silverware for the Blues this season.

The 23-year-old has already won three senior trophies since making his breakthrough from the academy, where he also won a number of accolades in the youth competitions.

Mount has gone on to become a key player for Chelsea, making 141 appearances for the club across all competitions.

Those numbers include the fact he has played under two different managers, making the transition from Frank Lampard’s style to Thomas Tuchel and keeping his place in the team.

The German coach insists he loves having the England international at his disposal, who is so desperate to play for the club, that he was seen glaring at his manager when he isn’t in the side.

Discussing Mount’s glares, Tuchel said: "I get the eyes, I get the look. I know the look, of course. He [Mount] is here to play these kinds of matches, but we were simply opting for runners.”

He also added: "I felt Mason not in the 100 percent zone where he is like untouchable, which he normally almost is. So we took that decision and it can happen from time to time.

"He’s not happy about it, but it will not last long because everyone loves Mason - me included."

The midfielder will be hoping he can battle his way back into the side that walks out on the hallowed turf of Wembley on Sunday, having recently struggled with an ankle injury.

The competition could represent redemption for Mount, who missed a crucial penalty in 2020 that sent the Blues out against Tottenham in the round of 16.

Discussing the final on the Carabao Twitter account, the Chelsea player said: “Obviously over the last couple of years we haven’t managed to get to the final, obviously I missed a penalty against Tottenham that knocked us out, so now to be in the final and have a massive opportunity to win another trophy is brilliant for us.

“I’ve said it many times, we’re a club that’s very focused on being successful and winning trophies is number one, so it’s another one and another opportunity for us.”

The final represents a clean sweep of competitions that Tuchel has guided the club to in his short time at Stamford Bridge, having already reached an FA Cup and Champions League final last year.

The club also managed to add to their own collection under the German, winning the Club World Cup earlier this month in the UAE.

They won’t be happy to finish it there though, with the Carabao Cup final representing an opportunity to add yet more silverware and cement Tuchel’s men further in the history books.
