Chelsea midfielder Jorginho said he would be “haunted for the rest of his life” after European champions Italy once again failed to reach the World Cup finals.
The Azzurri were stunned by a last-gasp North Macedonia winner in their play-off semi-final tie in Palermo on Thursday night, meaning the four-time winners’ absence from football’s biggest tournament will extend to at least 12 years, having also missed out on the 2018 tournament in Russia.
Jorginho missed penalties in both qualification games against Switzerland last year which could have seen the play-offs avoided altogether this time and says those misses - in two games that were drawn - will never leave him.
"It hurts when I think about it, because I do still think about it and it will haunt me for the rest of my life," said the Chelsea star.
"Stepping up there twice and not being able to help your team and your country is something that I will carry with me forever, and it weighs on me."
