Chelsea star Cesar Azpilicueta recounts first memories after 'scary' head injury vs Southampton

Cesar Azpilicueta was present at Chelsea's latest training session despite suffering a nasty head injury against Southampton over the weekend in the Premier League. The Blues' captain attempted to head a loose ball clear but was then met by the boot of Sekou Mara who had attempted an overhead kick.

Following the clash, which left him unconscious, medical staff spent 10 minutes helping Azpilicueta before he eventually departed the pitch, clapping the fans as he was stretchered off and taken to hospital.

Azpilicueta then posted an update the following day, tweeting: "Hi everyone! Thank you all for your love and messages of support! My family and I would like to thank everyone who has been looking after me since yesterday’s incident…

"From the Chelsea medical team, to teammates and opponents, to St Mary’s and Cleveland Hospital and all staff members and doctors: a massive thank you from the bottom of my heart. Now, time to recover and I will see you soon on the pitch!"

With the Chelsea stars given Sunday and Monday off following their defeat at the weekend, training resumed at Cobham on Tuesday, with Azpilicueta also in attendance. The 33-year-old was pictured in conversation with Graham Potter while training took place around them and the Spaniard has now provided an update on his condition and what he remembers from the incident.

"I'm feeling ok," he told Chelsea's official Twitter account. "It's great to be back after being discharged from the hospital and coming to say hello and watch training.

"It was scary, mostly for the people around me and my family. The last thing I could remember was when the corner was going to be kicked. The first thing [I heard] when I woke up was when the fans were signing my name, so I would like to say thank you.

"Now I have a couple of days to recover well and then start progressing my way back to the pitch. We have to take it step by step."
