Chelsea set to make millions from FIFA during World Cup that will pay off Graham Potter demands

Chelsea are set to receive a bonus for allowing players to compete in the World Cup but could miss out on extra funds due to injuries to key players.

FIFA is paying out to all the clubs that have allowed their players to go to Qatar for the 2022 tournament, and teams will receive compensation for the players missing out on time with their clubs as the break splits the season into two for the first time.

The final games of the domestic and European season are already over heading into the competition, and Chelsea won't be in action again until December 27 after being knocked out of the Carabao Cup. This leaves Graham Potter with a handful of squad members left during the next month.

Twelve players were called up in total, though Reece James, Ben Chilwell and N'Golo Kante were all likely to be chosen had they not been injured. Kepa Arrizabalaga and Wesley Fofana may have been in contention for places had they not also had injuries in the weeks leading up to selection.

These injuries are also set to cost Chelsea financially as the FIFA scheme pays out £8,500 per player, per day. That means that every club with players will receive a minimum of £161,500 over the group stages. Chelsea, with 12 players involved, will get £1.93m.

This could increase, though, with players from England, Brazil and Spain all expected to progress further through the tournament. For example, should England get to the final - with Mason Mount, Raheem Sterling, and Conor Gallagher all picked in Gareth Southgate's 26-man squad - Chelsea would pocket £714,000 from that trio alone.

There may well be frustration then that Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Trevoh Chalobah weren't picked, as their inclusion in a successful England run to the final would raise that bonus to £1.19m. Through injured players for England and France, Chelsea could also be missing out on another £953,000.

As for the current group, the best bet would be for England to reach the final, with Senegal also getting that far. This would result in five players getting the maximum bonus, with Kalidou Koulibaly and Edouard Mendy participating for the African Cup of Nations winners. Chelsea would therefore earn £1.19m from those players, on top of a minimum £1.13m from the rest participating in the group stages.

The best total they could end up with would be £2.34m. As a slight boost for Todd Boehly, this would pay off the cost that Chelsea spent to bring in Potter's backroom staff from Brighton.
