Chelsea set for 'direct talks' Romelu Lukaku with Inter as transfer solution eyed

Chelsea and Inter are set to discuss the future of Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku with the player keen for a return to the San Siro.

The Blues signed Lukaku last summer for a fee in the region of £100million but the 29-year-old has struggled to hit the heights he reached whilst playing for Inter. Lukaku is reportedly keen to return to the Italian side with direct communication between Chelsea and Inter set to start this week.

The Belgium international apologised for his comments during the 2021/22 season in which he declared his love for his former side and admitting he was 'not happy' with his situation at Chelsea. Thomas Tuchel opted to utilise Kai Havertz as his first choice striker for the majority of the season, with Lukaku now searching for an exit from Stamford Bridge.

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Inter have opened 'direct talks' with Chelsea this week regarding the transfer of Lukaku, with a loan deal the most likely solution for both parties. The Belgian forward scored 15 times in 44 appearances last season for the Blues, highlighting Lukaku's struggles upon his return to Stamford Bridge.

The 29-year-old has been angling for a move away from Chelsea for a number of months, having held discussions with the club about a move away this summer. Christian Pulisic, Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner are also facing uncertain futures at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have been linked with a number of attackers ahead of a crucial summer transfer window including the likes of Ousmane Dembele, Christopher Nkunku, Gabriel Jesus, Raheem Sterling, Raphinha, Richarlison, Lautaro Martinez, Serge Gnabry and Neymar. Despite losing both Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen at the start of a new era under Todd Boehly's ownership, Tuchel faces a tough task to reshape his squad in a number of key areas so that the Blues can compete on all fronts next season.
