Chelsea season preview: Exciting new era begins but incomplete squad lacks obvious goals

It’s a new dawn at Chelsea as Mauricio Pochettino prepares to take charge of his debut campaign at Stamford Bridge.

The Argentine coach returns to the Premier League after a rock-bottom season for the west Londoners, who are still midway through the squad overhaul that they believe is necessary to reach their former heights.

Here, Standard Sport Chelsea correspondent Nizaar Kinsella previews the Blues’ 2023-24 campaign...

What has changed in 11 weeks?

Where to start? Mauricio Pochettino looks a great appointment and a squad clear-out has led to the exit of 13 senior players, including Mason Mount, Kai Havertz and Mateo Kovacic. They have been replaced by a lot of unproven young talent but fans have hope again. Reece James has been appointed captain.

Transfer business

Christopher Nkunku looked electric in pre-season before his injury, but they still lack a reliable goalscorer and the success of their summer business could depend on whether they strengthen their midfield, as they target Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.

Tactic to look for

Pochettino’s 4-2-3-1 system will see one full-back attack and play like an out-and-out winger. Ben Chilwell seems like the favoured option, with Chelsea adopting a similar approach to Manchester City and Arsenal by switching to a back three in possession.

Success would be… Qualification for the Champions League. Pochettino has spoken of the need to “win now” at Stamford Bridge, but there are likely to be some bumps in the road.
