Chelsea sack Thomas Tuchel following £270m transfer spend

Chelsea FC have sacked their head coach Thomas Tuchel just days after spending the most money ever recorded in a single transfer window from a Premier League team.

Despite being only six games into the 2022/2023 campaign, the club made the decision to part company with the former PSG boss, the day after losing 1-0 to Dinamo Zagreb in round one of the Champions League group stage.

Chelsea have spent a quite incredible £271.1m according to the Daily Mail. This is the most money ever spent in a single transfer window by a Premier League team, and the most spent by any team in Europe this window.

It eclipses the £223m Manchester City recorded during 2017's window.

There have been a flurry of marquee signings which include Marc Cucurella (£62m), Kalidou Koulibaly (£34m) and Wesley Fofana (£70m). Despite the big arrivals, the club have endured a stuttering start, notably losing to Southampton and Leeds United in the Premier League, before their defeat in Europe last night.

In a statement made on the club website, Chelsea FC expressed their gratitude to Tuchel after 'parting ways' with him.

"On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, the Club would like to place on record its gratitude to Thomas and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the Club," the statement reads.

"Thomas will rightly have a place in Chelsea’s history after winning the Champions League, the Super Cup and Club World Cup in his time here."

This announcement comes after the club was taken over by new co-owner Todd Boehly, following the departure of Roman Abramovich.

"As the new ownership group reaches 100 days since taking over the club, and as it continues its hard work to take the club forward, the new owners believe it is the right time to make this transition," the statement concluded.
